Concrete Floor Stains, Dyes & Sealer

Staining concrete is an economical and highly versatile way to upgrade the look of both new and existing floor and patios. With stains, you have the ability to add subtle hints of color, bolder design accents, and even custom graphics. What’s more, concrete stains have small particles that penetrate deep into the concrete surface that produce fade-resistant, permanent color. Unlike with a paint or coating, the color won’t flake off or peel away.

Depending on the appearance you’re looking for, you can choose from acid-based chemical stains or water-based stains. Acid stains penetrate and react chemically with the concrete, creating natural color variations that add character and unique mottling effects. However, the color selection is generally limited to subtle earth tones, such as tans, browns, terracotta, and soft blue-greens.

If you want to go beyond the subtle drama and subdued color palette of acid staining, consider using water-based stains, which come in a full spectrum of hues. In many cases, the different colors can be mixed, like water-based paints, to broaden your options.

There are endless decorative effects you can achieve when using stains and our other floor types. Call us today at 262-573-0428 to talk about options.

Concrete Dyes

Dyes come in water and acid based options as well but are made up of larger particles that don’t penetrate as deep and are more solid and consistent colors. There are almost and endless number of colors along with the ability to mix these within the dye family as well as with stains.

Concrete dyes are a great, economical way to completely change the appearance of your concrete. There are some tremendous, cool, natural stone looking effects. When these are sealed with the appropriate sealers these floors can last a very long time.

Concrete Floor Sealers

There are two main types of sealers. Topical and penetrating. There is an industry standard called ASTM C309 that provides the specifications and tests for determining if a sealer is a topical or penetrating (membrane forming) Black Rhino Floors use various sealers depending on the application and budget. Most topical sealer will wear off at some point regardless of the durability. Penetrating only wears off if the concrete is worn away since the sealer has become a part of the concrete on a nano-particle level. The penetrating sealer is generally the most durable and more expensive than the topical alternatives.

Besides sealers protecting the beauty of the floor, some of these options can also be burnished (buffed) to add a higher gloss finish to the floor. Black Rhino Floors also provides a sealer that is a flexible glass coat sealer that is both a topical and a penetrator, both nano and sub-nano technology which allows for an incredibly hard surface that seals out all liquids, yet allows the floor to breath. This floor will wear like iron and allow for a high slip coefficient, way above the ADA (American with Disabilities Act) standard of .50. Our Glass Guard penetrating floor sealer is up to .90.
