Why Stain your Concrete Driveways and Sidewalks?

Stains allow for subtle hints of color or bold design accents or even custom graphics. Concrete stains penetrate deep in the surface providing fade-resistance and permanent color, unlike paint which is topical and will eventually flake, chip or peel away.

Depending on the overall design and appearance you’d like to achieve you can choose from our acid-based or water-based stains. Acid based stains penetrate and react chemically with the concrete, creating natural color variations adding very cool, one of a kind character to your floor however the color selection is a little bit more limited to earth tones such as tans, browns, terracotta and soft blue-greens. If you like a more vibrant end result than I would recommend our water-based stains.

Acid-based stains are made up of inorganic metallic salts dissolved in an acid and water
solution. They penetrate into the surface and chemically react with the concrete, creating a permanent bond. Acid-based stains are generally translucent and create unique, one of a kind look since all concrete is different. In addition, because of the chemical reaction, it causes a cool marbling effect that looks like natural stone.

Both acid and water-based stains are penetrating and not topical, creating a very durable, long term finish. Since the stains are not topical, they won’t chip, crack or peel like paint would.

Water-based stains do not chemically react with the concrete, they fill in the pores of the surface coating with a pigment ranging from translucent to opaque depending on the product.

The two most significant differences between acid and water-based stains is because the water-based stain does not react with the concrete, the color is very uniform and consistent and typically very low odor or in VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) and safer to apply since they are free of solvents and acids.
